US tech giant Apple is likely to switch from using proprietary Lightning port chargers on iPhones and other devices to USB-C from the launch of the next iPhone. Apple's move is in line with the new European law requiring technology companies to use USB-C charging ports as standard on mobile phones, tablets and cameras by 2024. According to a report by Bloomberg, Apple could introduce a USB-C port for charging the latest AirPods, AirPods Pro and AirPods by 2024. On the other hand, Mac accessories such as the Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad could switch to USB-C as early as next year.

With the European Union set to make USB-C charging mandatory for new smartphones, tablets and headphones by the end of 2024, there are rumours that Lightning ports will disappear. Before EU legislation takes effect, Apple will replace its AirPods, the report said. The iPhone 15 will mainly use the USB-C port by 2023, the report reveals.

However, these are still rumours and there is no confirmation from Apple yet. Interestingly, Apple already switched to USB-C ports on some laptops in 2015 and the iPad Pro in 2018. According to the report, Apple will start offering USB-C iPhones and iPads as well as the new iMac and Mac Pro next year.

However, the Apple Watch is still exempt from the new rule as it uses a MagSafe wireless charger instead of any port. Moreover, Apple is planning a wireless future. After doing away with the 3.5mm audio jack on the iPhone 7 and the SIM card slot on the iPhone 14 (in the US), the tech giant is preparing to go portless soon.
