Oppo's Find N2 and Find N2 Flip are the future of Foldable Devices

Oppo's Find N2 and Find N2 Flip are the future of foldable devicesLate last year, Oppo announced the Find N. It wasn't just an attempt to take on Samsung's mobile empire - it was an impressive first attempt at the foldable industry. With a larger, more usable outer display and a surprisingly minimal fold, it showed off some of the areas where the Galaxy Z Fold series could improve. It also left US buyers as envious as ever that Oppo phones are sold on this side of the Atlantic.

Twelve months later, Oppo has returned to follow in Samsung's footsteps. Similar to the original Galaxy Fold, the Find N series has been expanded to support two new foldable phones: the phablet-sized Find N2 and its smaller, clamshell-shaped sibling, the Find N2 Flip. Both aim to improve some of the worst aspects of foldable devices, so Samsung should make a strong showing at next summer's Galaxy Unpacked.

Let's start with the Find N2, because it is immediately more familiar than Oppo's new foldable phone. The company made no major changes this year, using a similar design with some key improvements. The 7.1-inch inner display is now much brighter, reaching a peak brightness of 1,550 nits, while the outer display is slightly larger at 5.54 inches as the side edges have been reduced. Oppo continues to focus on a landscape orientation for its foldable flagship, making the device much wider-and therefore more comfortable when closed-than the Galaxy Z Fold series.

Both screens are now 120Hz panels, but it is the Fold itself that will catch the eyes of users worldwide. The Find N2 features a second-generation hinge that is smaller, lighter, and more reliable than last year's flagship, reducing the weight of the entire device to just 233 grams. Oppo describes the fold as "almost invisible," which has been reduced compared to last generation. Considering how impressed we were with the Fold N compared to Samsung's efforts, this shows how far ahead the company really is.

The internal specs are what you would expect from a late 2022 smartphone. It is powered by a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, 12GB or 16GB of RAM and up to 512GB of storage, and comes with ColorOS 13. The 4,520 mAh battery is only slightly higher than that of the Galaxy Z Fold 4, which should provide excellent battery life. The Hasselblad-branded camera setup also looks impressive, and in fact consists of exactly what we expect to see on the OnePlus 11 next year. A 50MP primary lens, a 48MP ultra-wide-angle shot, and a 32MP 2x telephoto sensor, plus a 32MP selfie cam for photos and video calls.

Of course, this is not the only foldable phone Oppo will unveil this year. The Find N2 Flip is the first clamshell variant in the series, and it is very powerful. Powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 9000+, it is as powerful a flagship as the full Find N2, only in a smaller form factor. It uses the same next-generation hinge for almost invisible folding, as well as containing a huge 4,300 mAh battery.

This is a much larger battery than that supported by the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and should offer far greater longevity than Samsung's clamshell. Oppo will launch the Find N2 and Find N2 Flip in China starting today, with starting prices of CNY 8000 and CNY 6000, respectively. The company says both devices will be available worldwide, with the Flip launching in most European countries early next year.
