Samsung December 2022 update rolling out for these Galaxy devices

Every month, Google and its partners release a new security patch for Android that fixes known problems with the mobile operating system. The security patch you will receive on your Galaxy phone includes a number of fixes from the 1 December 2022 bulletin and the previous 5 November bulletin. Between the two, there are 43 fixes marked as 'high' severity and only one marked as 'critical'.

The patch notes are provided by Samsung, as the updates for its devices include a number of Galaxy-specific fixes. According to the company's official patch notes, the December update for Samsung phones adds 93 more security vulnerabilities, including five marked as 'critical'. Samsung continued the rollout of Android 13 with One UI 5.0. The update is rather limited compared to what we see on Google Pixel phones.

Devices with Samsung December 2022 security update

Galaxy S series

The flagship of Samsung's range is the Galaxy S series. As one would expect, this series is often the first to receive the latest OTAs. However, this is not always the case. Sometimes other devices receive preferential treatment, but mostly the S series is first in line.

In a strange move, Samsung sent the December update to the Galaxy S20 series first. The entire range is already starting to receive the patch in large parts of Europe, including Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, the Baltic region, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and the UK.

Galaxy Z series

While the Galaxy S series is often sold as Samsung's biggest and best line of phones, the secret star of Samsung devices is undoubtedly the Z series. The future is foldable and the Korean tech giant is the market leader in this new form factor. The Z Fold is the spiritual successor to the now defunct Note series. This means that features are slowly being added to the Z series with each device revision.

The Galaxy Z Fold 4 was updated earlier this month and devices with AT&T in the US were able to get the OTA file on their foldable smartphones. At around 400 MB, Samsung's December update is rather large for a monthly patch, but includes all important fixes and vulnerabilities.

Galaxy A series

Although not the cheapest of Samsung's smartphones in all regions, in many parts of the world the Galaxy A series offers affordable prices but with some premium features. The A series is offered at different price levels, which means that you can choose features without the costs piling up.

The first A-series phone to receive the December 2022 security update is the Samsung Galaxy A90 5G. This device had a limited release and is not available in all regions. Devices in Australia and New Zealand are starting to receive the patch, but the update to One UI 5.0 is missing.
