Twitter will increase the character limit of tweets to 4,000, according to Musk

Twitter will increase its character limit from the current 280 to 4,000, the company's new CEO Elon Musk confirmed on Twitter.

Responding to a question whether Twitter's alleged plans to increase the character limit to 4,000 were true, Musk replied 'Yes', without providing further information. Twitter originally had a 140-character limit, before raising it to 280 in 2017.

The exact details of the character limit increase are not yet known, but previous reports and Musk's tweets have suggested that Twitter could make it easier for users to split long chains of text into multiple tweets as part of a thread. It seems that the increase to 4,000 characters would eliminate this idea and users could simply publish longer blocks of text in single posts.

Over the weekend, Twitter announced plans to relaunch its Twitter Blue subscription service on Monday, which will offer users a verified blue tick and other benefits, such as the ability to edit tweets and upload high-resolution 1080p videos. Twitter Blue will be relaunched with a higher price tag of $11 per month for iPhone users, after Musk criticised Apple's 30% fee charged on in-app purchases.
